What are planetary transits?

Planetary transits occur when a planet in the current sky makes an aspect to a planet or point in your natal chart. Each major planet moves at a different speed — Mercury and Venus move through aspects in days, while Saturn and Pluto can take months or years to complete a transit. This is why certain periods of your life feel distinctly different: the sky above is forming specific geometrical relationships with the sky at the moment of your birth.

Frequently asked questions

How long do transits last?
It depends on the planet. Mercury and Venus transits last days; Mars transits last weeks; Jupiter transits last weeks to months; Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto transits can last months to years, with three passes due to retrograde motion.
Are some transits more important than others?
Yes. Outer planet transits (Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) over natal Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Midheaven are the most significant life events. Inner planet transits are useful for timing within a framework set by the outer planets.
