Ancient timing for modern decisions

Every hour has a ruling planet.

Planetary hours divide the day into unequal segments ruled by the seven classical planets. Used since Hellenistic times for timing — business decisions, communications, medical procedures, magical operations — planetary hours remain one of the most practical tools in traditional astrology.

How planetary hours work

Planetary hours do not correspond to our standard clock hours. Instead, the period from sunrise to sunset is divided into 12 equal parts (day hours) and sunset to sunrise into another 12 equal parts (night hours). The ruling planet for the first hour of each day is determined by the day of the week (hence the days' names: Sunday = Sun, Monday = Moon, Tuesday = Mars/Tiw, Wednesday = Mercury/Woden, Thursday = Jupiter/Thor, Friday = Venus/Frigg, Saturday = Saturn). Subsequent hours follow the Chaldean order: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best hour for a business meeting?
Jupiter hours favour expansion, optimism and legal matters. Mercury hours favour communication, contracts and negotiations. Sun hours favour leadership, visibility and authority. Avoid Saturn hours for new ventures and Mars hours for sensitive negotiations.
Are planetary hours the same as astrology houses?
No. Planetary hours are temporal divisions of the day, not spatial divisions of the chart. They are complementary tools — you might check the planetary hour alongside your natal chart transits to find the most auspicious window within a day for a specific action.
