Menkalinan is the beta star of Auriga, the Charioteer, shining at magnitude 1.9. In the classical tradition it is assigned the nature of Mars and Mercury — a combination that produces sharpness of mind married to a driving, sometimes reckless, will. Vivian Robson, in his Fixed Stars and Constellations in Astrology, is blunt about it: "Ruin, disgrace, violent death. High passions and turbulent outcomes." That is the raw signature. The astrologer's task is not to repeat the phrase like a curse, but to judge where and how the star is configured in the chart.

Menkalinan in the Natal Chart: The Classical Signature

Robson's keywords are severe, and they are not decorative. Menkalinan carries the Mars-Mercury temperament in its most volatile form: the quick tongue, the hot temper, the mind that races ahead of caution. Where Mars alone produces force, and Mercury alone produces speech and calculation, together they produce the kind of person who acts on an idea before the idea has been tested.

Ptolemy, in the Tetrabiblos, classified the bright stars of Auriga among those of a Mars-Mercury complexion, and later authors — Bonatti in the Liber Astronomiae, Lilly in Christian Astrology — treated such stars as amplifiers of whatever planet they touched. Menkalinan does not create a destiny from nothing. It intensifies what is already promised in the chart, and it does so with a Martian edge.

In my own practice I have observed that Menkalinan rarely produces a mild life. It produces a life with sharp turns — sudden promotions, sudden falls, quarrels that end relationships overnight, decisions made in a single afternoon that reshape a decade. The question is always: which planet receives the star, and in what condition is that planet?

The Nature of the Star: Mars and Mercury Combined

Mars gives courage, initiative, and the capacity for violence — physical or verbal. Mercury gives eloquence, cunning, and speed of thought. Combined, they describe the polemicist, the trial lawyer, the surgeon, the military strategist, and also the gambler and the man whose mouth writes cheques his body must cash.

Robson's "high passions" are the key. Menkalinan does not produce cold ambition; it produces hot ambition. The native feels things at full volume. This is a strength when disciplined and a liability when not. The classical authors were not moralising — they were describing a temperament that tends to extremes, and extremes attract both triumph and catastrophe.

Menkalinan on the Angles

When Menkalinan is conjunct an angle — the Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant, or IC — it becomes one of the loudest voices in the chart. On the Ascendant, it stamps the personality and the body with Martian-Mercurial force: a quick, restless, sharp-tongued native, often with a lean or wiry physique and a penetrating gaze. The life is marked by initiative and by conflict.

On the Midheaven, Menkalinan colours career and reputation. It favours professions where the mind is a weapon — law, journalism, surgery, engineering, the military — but it also warns of public disgrace if the native's conduct is reckless. Robson's "disgrace" is most literal here: the fall is public because the rise was public.

On the Descendant, the star operates through partners and open enemies. Relationships are intense, often adversarial, and the native attracts people as forceful as himself. On the IC, it strikes at the roots — family turbulence, a disruptive home, or a private life that repeatedly erupts into the open.

Menkalinan Conjunct a Planet

Conjunct the Sun, Menkalinan produces a proud, forceful, self-willed native whose father or authority figures may be a source of conflict. Conjunct the Moon, it brings emotional volatility and a restless domestic life, especially if the Moon is angular. Conjunct Mercury, it sharpens the tongue to a blade — brilliant in debate, dangerous in argument.

Conjunct Mars, the star doubles Mars: extraordinary courage and drive, but also accident-proneness, fevers, and a tendency to violence or to being the victim of it. Conjunct Venus, it produces passionate attachments and quarrels in love. Conjunct Saturn, it is more controlled but harder: ambition pursued with cold determination, and a life marked by severe tests.

The condition of the planet matters enormously. A dignified, well-aspected planet can carry Menkalinan's force into constructive achievement. A debilitated or afflicted planet will express the star's worst face. This is the practical rule: judge the planet first, then add the star.
